Tribute to Late
Dr. Sonam Wangdu Changbhar

Doctor of Tibetan Medicine

17.2.1955 - 8.3.2000
Those who knew him will remember his soothing personality. Dr. Sonam Wangdu Changbhar was a traditional Tibetan physician with modern views. Hardworking, over the past decade he had established his own clinic in Calcutta and a Tibetan pharmacy in Sikkim. He treated thousands of patients during his 22 years of medical practice.

Without hesitation and an open mind he integrated modern Western medical diagnostic methods with traditional Tibetan herbal treatment. One of his many successful case studies he presented during a seminar at ITTM, Kalimpong, in 1996. It was published in AyurVijnana Vol. 4, Spring 1998, and an extensive interview with him in Vol. 5, Autumn 1998.

Wangdu Changbhar graduated from Men-Tsee-Khang and held the traditional Menrampa Degree (M.D.). Till 1988 he served as Chief Medical Physician at Men-Tsee-Khang branch clinics in Bylakuppe, Mysore. A Gold Medallist in Tibetan Medicine, he has taught and practised in Europe and Asia. He was a Fellow of the International Council of Ayurveda and Honorary Advisor to the Indian Board of Alternative Medicines. In 1997 he was awarded D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) by the Open International University for Complementary Medicines, Colombo.

In spite of his premature death, his achievements were enormous, and he frequently travelled and taught worldwide in a constant effort to promote Tibetan Medicine in India and abroad.

His family and the young Dr. Dorjee Wangdu of Chakpori Medical Institute, Darjeeling, continue his Tibetan Herbal Clinic at 400, Jodhpur Park, Calcutta.

Our loving respect and appreciation accompany Late Sonam Wangdu Changbhar into the far-off worlds.
