Their conceptions of the soul are > quite different from the Indo-Nepalese and Tibeto-Burmese one's; but having > been converted to Buddhism since a long time, they have been strongly > influenced by the latter. Notes from her electronic version of her book ( translated by Alice Travers, Darjeeling, October 2004): page 159, 162: translates bla as l'me = soul a story about a lama who falls into a dirty place with nettles and lost his bla from fear; he dies consequently because he lost his bla; p 162: the pla leaves the body from the top of the head he has one hair on top of this head from where he can seize the pla; the hair is like a rope through which the lma can extrct the pla from the body after someone dies. There is a better transaltion of pla than soul. In the body there are plural existences of pla, the lamas would therefore prefer to talk of a spirit or the consient principle rnam shes. Steinmann defines the rnam shes as the place where you receive sense impressions. the rnam shes is taken from the body after death, the lamas prefer to talk about rnam shes rather than pla; p184 pla could be traslated as soul; srog is a life support, one essential form of vital energy. Srog and pla are mobile elements of the body. When srog and pla are in normal positions the body is healthy. bla and srog are very fragile in babies; She metions one srog and three pla; they do powa for the pla that could not leave the body; noone among the Tamag agrees about the numbe rof pla: 1, 3, 7 or 9. This is a reason for disagrement among shamans and Tamang. she mentions a Lama Wangyal who says there is only one principle of pla that is the semla pla. sems can see the pla like in a dream where you can see images., sem la goes out of the body though the rnam shes; sems la represents consciousness; sems = flame in an oil lamp pla = smoke that comes form the lamp when we extinguish it. fo lamas ther is no substantial soul, only interdependent psychic processes, but still they do the ritual of calling back the pla, rnam shes is the real point, to understand perceptions; after pla has left the rnam shes is ultimate reality to condition next rebirth after the pla has left most shamans songs ae to call back the pla. 186: 7 pla: three in the head, three in chest, 1 goes everywhere. one pla in the feet, one in heart one in hand, pla of the heart is able to laeve and walk 3 times a day, when it is difficult for your to open your eyes in the morning the pla is lost form the heart, 3 KAPI or KOPA are like rnam shes. rnam shes will be reborn in dewachen'2+"Brigitte Steinmann" gSubba, Tanka B.t 1988TMSocial Adaptation of the Tibetan Refugees in the Darjeeling- Sikkim HimalayascThe Tibet Journale133y49 - 57arefugees 8170991218 :Subba, Tanka BahadurRKDynamics of a hill society : the Nepalis in Darjeeling and Sikkim Himalayas 1sta Delhi Mittal Publications 1989xvi, 15789905158 Tanka B.
