offers
transliteration
of tibetan texts
into wylie

ITTM is now offering to scholars worldwide the transliteration of Tibetan texts into Wylie. Our two full-time Tibetan data input operators, each with seven years of experience, have almost completed the transliteration of 21 seminal Tibetan medical texts. To raise funds to complete the final proofreading of these texts and to continue giving employment to these two Tibetan women, ITTM is now offering transliteration services of Tibetan texts.

We offer Draft Versions and Complete Text Versions.

draft version (with some errors; to save money and time)

• Your complete text will be typed in by each of the two data input operators.
• The two resulting files will be compared electronically and the errors will be corrected by two input operators.
• These two text versions will again be compared electronically, and errors will be corrected.
• You will receive a text file in Extended Wylie Transliteration Scheme (EWTS), and you can correct any remaining errors while you translate or work with your text.

This draft version usually results in 2-3 errors per formatted A4-sized page.

complete text version (99% accuracy)

This transliteration will go through ten stages. For details, click here. In brief, the transliteration process is as follows:

• Your complete text will be typed in by each of the two data input operators.
• The two resulting files will be compared electronically and the errors will be corrected by two input operators.
• These two text versions will again be compared electronically, and errors will be corrected.
• The final text will be checked electronically and formatted into a PDF file in u-chan script.
• A print-out of your text will be proof-read by a qualified Tibetan proof reader and any remaining errors will be corrected.
• You will receive a text file in Extended Wylie Transliteraton Scheme (EWTS) and a PDF file in u-chan script by e-mail (on request, we can also provide a Unicode text version).

The time to complete your work will depend on size, and our workload. Currently, a 100 page (A4 size) project takes about three weeks delivered for the draft version and 6-8 weeks for the complete text version.

The transliteration process will be overseen by the ITTM trustee Barbara Gerke (M.Sc., D.Phil.cand., Social and Medical Anthropology, Oxford University) and the software engineer Daniel Muller, Switzerland.
